The Bible Church of Owasso seeks to please God for the glory of Christ. God has given us all the resources and instructions we need to be able to do so. The Holy Spirit penned these words in Ephesians 4:11-16 as one of the mandates of Jesus' church:
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
God gives His church gifted ministers to equip His people for the works of ministry. At BCO, one of the ways we attempt to equip people is through our Equip "U" Adult and Young Adult Sunday school classes. We chose to use the letter "U" to capture two goals. First, Equip "U" will be a place of learning. Like a university setting, the goal is instruction. To be effective in the work of ministry, people need to be taught well. Second, Equip "U" is about equipping you, as Jesus. disciple. Our goal is to instruct, and then go farther; we strive to equip each person for understanding and living the Christian life in a deliberate way. To say it as James said it, we are striving to be doers of the Word and not merely hearers. We are learning to practice what we are taught and build it into others.
The teaching in our classes will be centered on Christ. He is all we need for life and godliness (2 Pet 1:3), for our sanctification (1 Cor 1:30), and for the directions we need for living (Matt 28:18-20). Ephesians 4 reminds us that Christ is to be the foundation of all our instruction for those and many other reasons. These classes will be taught to encourage and exhort each person to serve Christ and His people, so that Jesus. church will be built up and useful to Him in this world.
Individual Equip "U" classes will be 8-week sessions on foundational Christian life issues such as Bible study skills, prayer, marriage, parenting, evangelism, stewardship, decision making, apologetics and more. These classes will be discussion-oriented in order to make this teaching and equipping as personal and profitable as possible. We plan to repeat most classes periodically to refresh and deepen our understanding in new ways. By obeying our Lord in this specific way, we trust Jesus will build His church.
